Aintree Horse Racing Betting with William Hill

Aintree racecourse is best known as the home of the world's greatest steeplechase, the Grand National, which takes place on third day of the track's three-day April Festival.

That fantastic Grand National Meeting, which stands second only to the Cheltenham Festival in terms of importance, is lit up by no less than eleven Grade 1 contests as the iconic Merseyside venue plays host to the biggest stars in the sport. Read on for a guide to Aintree betting with William Hill.

Aintree betting – the big races

Betway Bowl – A 3m1f Grade 1 contest on the opening day of the April Festival, that often features horses who ran in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham the previous month. Because of the flatter nature of Aintree, this race is seen as the ideal target for stayers that have a higher cruising speed, especially as conditions are normally on the good side.

Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices' Hurdle – The natural target for horses who ran well in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham and a race that is often won by a horse who goes on to prove a major player in the Champion Hurdle betting the following season.

Aintree Hurdle – The premier 2m4f Grade 1 hurdle race in the calendar and a race that attracts horses who are able to go up in trip from the Champion Hurdle or cut back in trip from the Stayers' Hurdle.

Melling Chase – A 2m4f Grade 1 chase that has a star-studded role of honour that includes champion chasers Moscow Flyer, Master Minded and Sprinter Sacre.

Maghull Novices' Chase – The obvious next step for the season's top two-mile novice chasers, many of whom would have run in the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham, but only the real top-notchers go on to complete the big-race double. The winner of this race will almost certainly go on to be a major player in the following season's Champion Chase betting.

Grand National Chase – With a value of £1m, this iconic steeplechase is easily the richest jumps race in the world and few can rival it in terms of pubic betting interest. It provides arguably the greatest spectacle in the sport, with 40 horses thundering across 30 fences over four-miles two-and-a-half furlongs.

It is a race that continues to produce great stories, both human and equine, and remains the most ferociously competitive handicap chase of the entire year.

Liverpool Hurdle – Effectively a re-run of Cheltenham's Stayers' Hurdle and a race that usually crowns the champion stayer of that season. The Grade 1 contest was dominated by the great Big Buck's earlier this century, with Paul Nicholls' star landing the odds four years in succession.

Old Roan Chase - A Grade 2 chase run over 2m4f on the Mildmay Course in October and a contest that has been lit up by icons like Monet's Garden in recent years.

Becher Chase – An early season trial for the Grand National run over the same fences, albeit only 21 of them, nine fewer than the April showpiece. It is a race that has a major bearing on Grand National odds, with the likes of Amberleigh House and Silver Birch having done the Becher-Grand National double.

Aintree odds – impact on ante-post betting for future races

Nearly all of the races run at Aintree's three-day April Festival have an impact on ante-post betting lists, including the Grand National, where the winner is nearly always given a Grand National betting quote to repeat the feat in 12 months time.

Grand National odds will also be heavily impacted by the result of the Becher Chase which takes place over the Grand National fences earlier in the season.

The winner of the Anniversary Novices' Hurdle will earn a prominent position in either Champion Hurdle betting or Stayers' Hurdle betting for the following season, while betting for the latter contest is also heavily influenced by the outcome of the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle.

Queen Mother Champion Chase betting lists for the following season will often need a reshuffle after the Melling Chase and the Maghull Novices' Chase.

Aintree course characteristics

The Grand National course is triangular with its apex (the Canal Turn) the furthest point from the stands. The Grand National is run over two complete circuits and takes in 30 fences, providing one of the toughest tests there is for horse and rider.

There have been many modifications to the race in recent years in order to improve safety levels, notably lessening the stiffness of the fences and moving the start further away from the noise of the main stand, meaning horses are less likely to get 'buzzed up' pre-race.

The run-in remains 494yds long, including an elbow, and provides one of the stiffest conclusions to any horse race in the world.

Inside the Grand National course sits the easier Mildmay course which has birch fences. A major feature of the Mildmay course is its sharpness and the fences there are stiffer than used to be the case.

Races are generally run at a reasonable tempo so having a horse that travels strongly and that can get into a rhythm is often an advantage. Horses struggling by the home term rarely win but the long run-in means stamina is fully tested.

Aintree betting tips

One of the key factors in assessing competitors in the Grand National is handicap marks. Given the amount of distance the horses have to travel, the amount of weight they carry is a major component in their overall prospects.

Grand National weights are published well in advance of the race itself, with many trainers now opting to not run their big-race hopes until after the weights have been unveiled, in order to preserve their mark.

Whilst the Grand National fences may not be as stiff as they once were, they still provide the most thorough examination of a horse’s jumping ability, with iconic fences like Becher's Brook and the Chair still proving formidable of obstacles.

Previous experience at the Merseyside venue is usually a must when it comes to Aintree betting, and the ability to travel and jump proficiently in the heat of battle are major assets.

Given the much sharper nature of the Mildmay course, speed horses tend to be favoured, especially on spring ground at the Grand National meeting, but the ability to jump well remains a key factor because the fences are some of the stiffest in the country.
