Ayr betting with William Hill

Guide to Betting at Ayr

Ayr is Scotland’s premier racecourse and stages both flat and National Hunt racing. The biggest Ayr betting races are the Scottish Grand National and the Ayr Gold Cup.

William Hill promotions provide the best Ayr odds and the latest Scottish Grand National betting.

There are also special offers and price boosts on the top Ayr races throughout the racing year.

Betting at Ayr – The Big Meetings

The highlight of the flat racing season at Ayr is the three-day Western Meeting in September. There are two Listed races on the Friday and a Group 3 and Listed contest on the Saturday.

The feature event of the week is the Ayr Gold Cup, one of the richest sprint handicaps in Europe. The race is so popular that a consolation Silver Cup (1992) and Bronze Cup (2009) were established for horses balloted out of the main event.

By far the biggest Ayr betting race over jumps is the Scottish Grand National in April. The supporting card includes the Grade 2 Scottish Champion Hurdle and the Future Champion Novices’ Chase. There are nearly 40 Ayr race meetings during the season, with a mixture of flat and jump racing.

Ayr Betting – The Big Races

The Ayr Gold Cup became a 6f sprint in 1908, having previously taken place over longer distances.

Ayr bets on the Gold Cup can be placed ante-post several weeks before the race. The prize money often attracts runners from the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot and Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.

Red Rum (1974) is the only horse to have won the Scottish Grand National and the Grand National in the same season.

The Scottish National now takes place only a week after Aintree, making it unlikely that his achievement will ever be repeated. Ayr tips on this race should focus on horses who prefer faster ground.

The Scottish Derby ran from 1979 to 2005 and was originally restricted to three-year-olds. The race was opened to older horses in 1987 and the name changed to the Scottish Classic a year later.

Notable winners include Ascot Gold Cup winner Little Wolf (1981) and St Leger winner Moon Madness (1986).

Ayr Betting Tips

Despite being one of the fairest tracks in the country, there are still some important things to consider before placing your Ayr bets.

One of the top Ayr tips is to take the effect of the draw into account for races over 5f and 6f.

When the stalls are placed on the stands side, there is a clear advantage for horses drawn middle to high. However, there is no discernible advantage when the stalls are on far side of the course.

If betting on the Ayr Gold Cup, take note of the results of the Silver Cup and Bronze Cup. The outcome of these races will give you a good idea of any draw bias in the big race.

Local trainers Keith Dalgleish and Jim Goldie figure prominently in Ayr betting statistics. Flat jockeys Phillip Makin and Daniel Tudhope have a good strike rate at the track. Jockey Graham Lee won the Grand National and Scottish Grand National, before switching to the flat and features regularly in Ayr tips.

When assessing the Ayr odds for the Scottish National, keep right up to date with the going at the track. The ground is usually good in mid-April and will not suit horses that have been running well in soft ground all winter.

National Hunt jockey Brian Hughes has a fine record here and it’s always worth following Sam Twiston-Davies at this course.

Ayr Course Characteristics

Ayr is a left-handed course of 1m4f with a long home straight of half a mile. There is a straight 6f course for sprint races, including the valuable Ayr Gold Cup. It’s a mostly flat, galloping track but can prove to be extremely testing when the going is heavy.

In soft or heavy conditions, avoid Ayr bets on horses that are doubtful stayers. This is especially true for Scottish Grand National tips, one of the longest races in the calendar at just over 4 miles. The fences are fair and you rarely get any hard luck stories at Ayr.

Ayr Racecourse - How to get there

Ayr is in south-west Scotland and is 37 miles from Glasgow via the M77. Ayr racecourse is clearly sign-posted on all major traffic routes approaching the town.

Ayr Railway Station is only a 10-minute walk from the course or five minutes by car. Prestwick International Airport is only a 10-minute journey from the course.

Ayr Horse Racing History

Horse racing has taken place in Ayr since the 16th Century, but the first official meeting was held at Seafield in 1771. The Ayr Gold Cup was first run in 1804 and became the feature race of the Western Meeting in 1824.

Racing was moved from Seafield to the current site in the Craigie area of Ayr in 1907 where there was more scope for expansion.

A new National Hunt course was created in 1950 and Ayr adopted the Scottish Grand National in 1966 when Bogside Racecourse was closed.

The only Classic race ever staged at Ayr was the St Leger in 1989 after Doncaster was abandoned due to safety concerns. The race was won by Michelozzo, owned by Charles St. George, trained by Henry Cecil and ridden by Steve Cauthen.

Famous Ayr Races and Racehorses

Red Rum’s 1974 Scottish Grand National victory was also significant for carrying a record-breaking 11st 13lbs. The popular Grey Abbey carried just 1lb less when winning for Trainer Howard Johnson in 2004.

One of the most popular winners of the race was Moorcroft Boy in 1996. He did not feature in many Ayr bets after suffering a life-threatening injury in a fall at Aintree. He was nursed back to health and won the race as a 20/1 outsider.

Moorcroft Boy was retired immediately after his victory, becoming the equine ambassador to a Racehorse Welfare Centre.

Other notable Scottish National winners include Aintree winners Little Polveir (1987) and Earth Summit (1994) and two-time winner Merigo (2010 and 2012). Merigo was trained by Andrew Parker in Lockerbie and featured in plenty of Ayr bets.

The Scottish Champion Hurdle used to be a level-weights contest. Sea Pigeon (1977 and 1978) and Birds Nest (1979 and 1981) both won the race twice. The race was changed to a handicap to attract more runners and is now one of the biggest Ayr betting races of the year.

The Scottish-trained Roman Warrior won under a record weight of 10 stone in the 1975 Ayr Gold Cup.

There are always plenty of Ayr betting tips for this highly competitive sprint with 28 runners spread across the course. Top sprinters to win the Ayr Gold Cup include the brilliant Lochsong in 1992.
