Cheltenham betting with William Hill

A guide to betting at Cheltenham

Cheltenham Racecourse is the home of Jumps racing and hosts a prestigious four-day meeting in March. Cheltenham Festival betting is available throughout the year, including on the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle and Champion Chase.

William Hill has a range of Cheltenham Festival offers like Non-Runner Money Back and Best Odds Guaranteed. Plus, there are other great promotions to look over for during the four days.

Betting at Cheltenham – The Big Meetings

During the winter and spring, there are several key meetings at Cheltenham, which all lead into March’s Cheltenham Festival.

It starts with The Showcase Meeting in October, which acts as the curtain raiser for the Gloucestershire track. Then come the November and The International Meetings, which start to paint a picture for some of the Cheltenham Festival markets.

In January, it’s Festival Trials Day. A significant day of racing, which sees the Cleeve Hurdle and the Cotswold Chase. And it’s these races that can shape the odds ahead of the festival.

But it’s really all about the Cheltenham Festival in March. The four-day meeting sees 28 races, half of which are Grade 1s. Each day sees 65,000 racegoers flock to the course to watch the very best horses on the National Hunt scene.

Cheltenham Betting – The Big Races

With 14 of the 28 races over the four-day Cheltenham Festival Grade 1s, you get an idea of the quality on display.

Each day has a Championship race:

  • Tuesday – Champion Hurdle

  • Wednesday – Champion Chase

  • Thursday – Stayers’ Hurdle

  • Friday – Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the biggest race of the festival and holds plenty of prestige in the National Hunt season. It’s a true test for chasers and is run over 3m2f.

Away from the Championship races, there are plenty of top-class contests. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is the meeting’s curtain-raiser that demands jumping accuracy and speed.

Then there’s the Ryanair Chase – the feature race on Thursday – and the Arkle, which tests a horse’s ability to jump the larger obstacles.

You can also find races limited to mares. On the opening day, it’s the Mares’ Hurdle – first raced in 2008 – and there’s the Mares’ Chase on the final day, which was won by Colreevy in the race’s inaugural year 12 months ago.

Cheltenham Betting Tips

When it comes to the Cheltenham Festival, there are plenty trends and statistics that can help you work out what might happen in the race. Here are some for the Championship races.

Champion Hurdle

In the last 10 years, eight of the winners were aged between six and eight. Plus, eight of the last 10 winners had previously won a Grade 1 hurdle. Last year saw Honeysuckle win under Rachael Blackmore and she’ll be going for glory once more.

Champion Chase

Each of the last 10 winners had experience over fences with at least seven runs under their belts. Plus, nine of the past 10 had already won a Grade 1 chase. Put The Kettle On battled gamely for victory 12 months ago. This time around is likely to see a battle between Shishkin and Energumene.

Stayers’ Hurdle

Surprises have been common in the last couple of renewals. Lisnagar Oscar won at 50/1 in 2020, while it was Flooring Porter at 12/1 last year.

From the trends, horses aged six to eight have won the last eight renewals. While seven of the last 10 had won a Graded hurdle over this 3m trip.

Gold Cup

The Blue Riband event that captures the imagination of National Hunt racing fans. Last year saw a one-two for trainer Henry de Bromhead, as Minella Indo defeated stablemate A Plus Tard.

Horses aged between seven and nine seem to be in their prime for the Gold Cup, winning nine of the last 10 renewals. While being lightly raced in that season could be key with horses having no more than four runs being successful in nine of the last 10.

Cheltenham betting – Top trainer and jockeys

It can be worth paying attention to the records of the trainers and jockeys who’ll be in action at the Cheltenham Festival.

Nicky Henderson has a long history with the meeting and took his tally of winners to 70 in 2021. If you’re looking for other UK trainers, then there’s Paul Nicholls – 12-time Champion Trainer – and Dan Skelton.

But in recent years, the Irish have dominated. Willie Mullins has been crowned top trainer eight times since 2011. While Gordon Elliott has twice claimed the accolade (2017 & 2018).

In 2021, both Mullins and Henry de Bromhead trained six winners. So, these two trainers could be in for a good 2022 Cheltenham Festival.

Since the retirements of Sir AP McCoy and Ruby Walsh, the top Cheltenham jockey is a more open affair. Last year saw history made when Rachael Blackmore became the first female jockey to take the crown, riding six winners, including Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle.

There are plenty of other names in the mix with Blackmore. Paul Townend had five winners in 2020, and he’ll have several big rides for Willie Mullins. And there’s Jack Kennedy, who rode last year’s Gold Cup winner, as well as Davy Russell, who bagged the Cheltenham title in 2018.

Cheltenham Course Characteristics

A left-handed track with stiff fences, Cheltenham Racecourse is renowned for its testing uphill finish. But, in fact, there are two different courses, which test different aspects of a horse’s ability.

Old Course

The first two days of the Cheltenham Festival are on the Old Course which is slightly sharper than the New Course.

Horses who race prominently tend to go well in races over fences, especially the shorter trips. It’s thought this is a course that suits a speedier type.

New Course

A stiffer test of stamina, horses who stay well are better suited to the New Course.

It’s used for the final two days of the Cheltenham Festival, including the Gold Cup. Trainers will look through their ranks for durable horses to compete in races on this course. Sound jumping and stamina are two key components to look out for.

And there’s the Cross-Country Course. It’s only seen once during the week for the Cross Country Handicap Chase over 3m6f. It provides a range of challenges and fences to jump, like the mini–Canal Turn and Cheese Wedges.

Cheltenham Racecourse - How to get there

Cheltenham Racecourse is situated at Prestbury Park in Gloucestershire. The track is in a natural amphitheatre beneath the Cotswold Hills, with stunning views across the course.

Cheltenham is only two hours from London by car and one hour from Bristol and Birmingham. The course is clearly signposted at Junction 10 on the M5.

If going by train, there is a shuttle bus that runs from Cheltenham Spa to the track on racedays.

Cheltenham Horse Racing History

Racing has a long and illustrious history at Cheltenham, and Prestbury Park has been home to the racecourse since 1831.

Since 1911, the festival as we know it has been held at Cheltenham, although it started off as the National Hunt Chase, held in Market Harborough. And in its early history the venue flitted between Cheltenham and Warwick. In 1964, Cheltenham Racecourse was brought by the Jockey Club.

You might be surprised by which Championship race has the longest history. The Stayers’ Hurdle was first run in 1912, making it the longest running of the ‘big four’, with the Gold Cup first held in 1924.

The Champion Chase and Champion Hurdle were introduced to the Cheltenham Festival schedule in 1927 and 1959. The Cross Country was added in 1995.

Famous Cheltenham Races and Racehorses

Over the years, there have been great stories and repeat successes at the Cheltenham Festival.

One of the earliest stars was Golden Miller, who won the Gold Cup five years running between 1932 and 1936. Then, in the mid-60s, Arkle won three-in-a-row, and many view him as one of the best chasers of all time.

The 1983 Gold Cup saw a remarkable achievement from trainer Michael Dickinson – his horses filled the first five places. Plus, there were famous wins by Dawn Run (1986) and the popular Desert Orchid (1989).

More recently, we’ve watched Best Mate complete a hat-trick of Gold Cup wins in 2004, propelling Henrietta Knight’s charge into racing folklore. Then came the ding-dong battles between Kauto Star (2007 & 2009) and Denman (2008). While in 2019 and 2020, Al Boum Photo showed his class in the Blue Riband race.

Not only are heroes made in the Gold Cup. They come in all races, including the Champion Hurdle, where the likes of Hatton’s Grace, Persian War and Istabraq have all won it three times.

Badsworth Boy remains the only horse to win the Champion Chase three times. But dual winners include Moscow Flyer (2003 & 2005), Master Minded (2008 & 2009), Sprinter Sacre (2013 & 2016) and Altior (2018 & 2019).

Other festival races have seen greater periods of domination. Big Buck’s won the Stayers’ Hurdle four years running from 2009 to 2012. While the Mares’ Hurdle saw Quevega strut her stuff year after year, winning six times for Willie Mullins.
