The Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes is one of the top races of the season for two-year-old fillies. It is run over six furlongs on the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket in September. The meeting also features the Cambridgeshire Handicap, Middle Park Stakes and Royal Lodge Stakes.

The Cheveley Park Stakes betting features fillies that could run in the 1000 Guineas the following season. The first filly to win both the Cheveley Park Stakes and the 1000 Guineas was Pretty Polly in 1903-1904.

Aidan O’Brien had to wait until 2016 to break his duck. Brave Anna broke the ice by defeating stable companion Roly Poly and the odds-on favourite Lady Aurelia. Clemmie (2017) and Fairyland (2018) went on to complete a hat-trick of victories in the race for the Ballydoyle stable.

There is usually a small field for this race and there are few excuses for beaten horses at Newmarket.

Cheveley Park Stakes betting trends

The Cheveley Park Stakes betting has been a useful guide to finding the winner in recent years. Favourites or joint-favourites have a good record and most recent winners have been in the top three in the market.

Brave Anna was a notable exception in 2016 when winning at odds of 25-1. Those odds were something of an insult to the winner of the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Most of the money had been for American-trained Lady Aurelia, a breath-taking winner of the Queen Mary Stakes and successful in the Prix Morny at Deauville.

There was also a shock result in 2004 when Brian Meehan’s Magical Romance won at odds of 40-1. She was a rank outsider after winning a nursery handicap at Leicester on her previous start when rated only 83.

Many recent Cheveley Park winners had achieved an official rating of 105 or higher prior to this race.

Cheveley Park Stakes ante-post betting pointers

One of the best form pointers for the Cheveley Park Stakes is the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York. The best Irish form is represented by the Moyglare Stud Stakes. Fillies that have raced against the colts in France often feature prominently in Cheveley Park Stakes betting tips.

The Prix Robert Papin and the Prix Morny are open to colts and fillies and have each produced winners of the Cheveley Park Stakes. Pretty Pollyana and Signora Cabello finished first and second in the Prix Morny in 2018 but both were beaten at Newmarket.

The winner very often runs in the 1000 Guineas the following season. Some have run in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury prior to running in the fillies’ Classic.

In recent years, Cheveley Park Stakes winners have failed in the Classic. French trained Special Duty did win the 1000 Guineas in 2010, albeit after the disqualification of Jacqueline Quest.

Natagora, the 2018 winner, also went on to win the 1000 Guineas for France at Newmarket the following season. Prior to that, Sayyedati (1991 – 1992) was the last filly to complete the Cheveley Park/Guineas double.

She also won the Prix Jacques Le Marois (1993) and the Sussex Stakes on her third attempt in 1995.

Cheveley Park Stakes history and memorable winners

The Cheveley Park Stakes was first run in 1899 when it was won by Lutetia. Sir Gordon Richards is the leading jockey in the history of the race with nine winners, the last of them aboard Sixpence in 1953.

Lester Piggott won the race in 1976 on Durtal, trained by Barry Hills. The filly started favourite for the Epsom Oaks the following season but bolted before the start, injuring both herself and Piggott in the process.

She only raced once more after that before retiring to the paddocks where her offspring included dual Ascot Gold Cup winner Gildoran.

Marwell won the Cheveley Park in 1980, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Lester Piggott. She was the dam of Marling who won the same race herself eleven years’ later for Geoff Wragg and Walter Swinburn.

She was a champion sprinter, while her daughter’s Group 1 victories included the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes.

There was huge controversy in 1986 when Forest Flower was disqualified in favour of Minstrella. Forest Flower bumped Minstrella in forcing her way out of a pocket before going on to win by two and a half lengths.

The stewards allowed the result to stand but their decision was overturned on appeal.

Two of the most notable winners were the brilliant Criquette Head-trained pair Ma Biche (1982) and Ravinella (1987). Ma Biche also won the Prix Robert Papin as a two-year-old and returned to Newmarket to win the 1000 Guineas.

Ravinella beat Prix Morny winner First Waltz and Lowther Stakes winner Ela Romara in a top class renewal. She was a very popular Cheveley Park Stakes betting tip and would also win the 1000 Guineas, where she started odds-on favourite.

Cheveley Park Stakes betting 2019

Aidan O’Brien will be seeking a fourth consecutive victory in 2019. He often runs more than one filly in this race and will be plotting a route for his best juveniles from Royal Ascot to the end of the season.

The Cheveley Park Stakes odds are also likely to feature winners or placed horses from the top two-year-old races of the season to date; The Lowther Stakes at York, Moyglare Stud Stakes at Leopardstown and Prix Morny at Deauville.

The Cheveley Park Stud like to be strongly represented in their own race and will be keen to have a high profile runner. They have won the race on three previous occasions with Gay Gallanta (1994), Regal Rose (2000) and Hooray (2010).

John Gosden’s only win in the race came with Prophecy in 1993, ridden by Pat Eddery. She raced in the famous colours of Khalid Abdullah, also carried to victory in this race by Special Duty in 2009.
