Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting at William Hill

The Diamond Jubilee Stakes is one of the most important 6f sprint races in Europe and is staged on the closing Saturday of Royal Ascot. Diamond Jubilee Stakes ante-post betting is available from the start of the flat season.

It’s one of the top Royal Ascot betting races of the week and frequently attracts top international sprinters.

Choisir became the first Australian-trained winner at Royal Ascot in 2003. The huge number of Diamond Jubilee Stakes bets on Australian superstar Black Caviar in 2012 raised the profile of the race to new heights.

The Group 1 contest is for horses aged four and upwards and was formerly run as the Cork and Orrery Stakes. Three-year-olds were excluded in 2015 following the introduction of the Commonwealth Cup.

Three-year-olds foaled in the Southern Hemisphere can run in the race, 2018 winner Merchant Navy being a case in point.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting tips

Trainer James Fanshawe has a good record in this race. He trained Society Rock to win in 2011 and struck again with The Tin Man in 2017.

He also trained Sir Gerry to finish third in 2008 and Society Rock to finish second in 2010. Both horses were big outsiders in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting odds.

Most of the recent winners have raced within the two months prior to Royal Ascot. A previous win in a Group race is almost a pre-requisite for this race.

A very large percentage of previous winners also had at least one previous race that season, while winning form over 6f is another key factor when looking for Diamond Jubilee Stakes tips.

Black Caviar’s victory in 2012 was a rare success for fillies and mares in this race. International runners are always worthy of close attention when working out your Diamond Jubilee Stakes bets.

They travel great distances and no stone is left unturned these days in getting to the race in peak condition.

Australia first won with Choisir (2003) and placed horses include Brazen Beau, Star Witness and Takeover Target. Starspangledbanner (2010) and Merchant Navy (2018) both joined Aidan O’Brien from Australia, so take note of any Australian connection with your Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting tips.

There’s no clear draw bias at Ascot, but front runners have a good record over this distance. If a jockey judges the pace correctly, they can be very difficult to overhaul.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting trends

There was a spate of shock results between 2006 and 2011, with winners at 20/1, 25/1 and two rank outsiders at 33/1. Fancied runners have fared better recently, although even Black Caviar (1/6 favourite) gave her supporters some anxious moments before winning.

The recent age-limit changes make this a tricky race to assess, but horses aged four and five have fared best in recent seasons. Before their exclusion in 2015, only two three-year-olds had won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 18 years.

Although sprinters can bridge the gap between handicaps and Group 1, recent trends suggest Diamond Jubilee Stakes tips should focus on proven Group-level performers. Most winners have had an official rating of 118 or more prior to the race.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes ante-post betting pointers

The best trial races for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in recent years have been the Duke Of York Stakes at York and the Leisure Stakes at Windsor. It’s not unknown for horses to run well in the 5f King’s Stand Stakes earlier in the week, before running again here.

2016 winner Twilight Son finished only fifth in the Duke Of York Stakes, as did Starspangledbanner before winning in 2010.

Lethal Force was second to Society Rock in the same race before reversing the form in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2013. The Duke Of York Stakes usually has a big influence on the Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting at Royal Ascot.

The next logical objective for horses running in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes is the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket. Starspangledbanner (2010), Lethal Force (2013) and Slade Power (2014) all won both races in the same season.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes history and memorable winners

The Diamond Jubilee Stakes was first run in 1868 as the All-Aged Stakes and renamed the Cork and Orrery Stakes in 1926. The name changed again in 2002 to commemorate Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee and later her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

The international flavour of the race was never better illustrated than in 2012 when Black Caviar took the valuable prize. Betting on the Diamond Jubilee Stakes hit record levels as crowds flocked to see the unbeaten Australian mare.

Her legion of supporters had to wait for the result of a photo finish after jockey Luke Nolen dropped his hands too soon.

The photograph revealed that Black Caviar had held on by a head from the fast-finishing Moonlight Cloud. It later transpired that Black Caviar had sustained an injury during the race. She remained unbeaten in 25 career races and was officially retired in April 2013.

The victory of Choisir in 2003 was even more remarkable as it came just four days after winning the King’s Stand Stakes. He became the first horse to win twice at Royal Ascot in 20 years when completing the famous sprint double.

Other international winners of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes include Hong Kong-trained Cape of Good Hope (2005) and American-trained Undrafted (2015). Undrafted was trained by Wesley Ward, a regular and extremely successful visitor to Royal Ascot in recent years, especially with his two-year-olds.

Lester Piggott is the leading jockey in the history of the race with 10 wins, his last being aboard College Chapel in 1993. The well-backed son of Sharpo was trained by Vincent O’Brien, the last of his five winners in this race and his 25th and final Royal Ascot winner.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes 2021

Blue Point finished third in the Commonwealth Cup in 2017 and won last year’s King’s Stand Stakes. William Buick tracked the free-running Battaash before cutting him down to win by a length and three-quarters. Victories at Meydan in the spring have put Godolphin’s five-year-old at the top of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes odds for 2021.

Eqtidaar and Sands of Mali finished first and second in the Commonwealth Cup last year and both stay in training. Sands of Mail won at Ascot in the Group 1 Champions Sprint Stakes in October on soft ground.

Sir Michael Stoute trains Eqtidaar, who disappointed in both the July Cup and the Haydock Sprint Cup, but still has plenty of scope for improvement.

French raider City Light was one of the unluckiest losers of Royal Ascot 2018, making up late ground but failing to catch Merchant Navy by a short-head in this race. Stephane Wattel was narrowly denied his first Group 1 winner in 30 years as a trainer.

City Light did provide Wattel with his first winner in England at the Lingfield All-Weather Championships last year. The talented son of Siyouni is prominent in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting again this year as he seeks to go one better.
