William Hill promotions keep you right up-to-date on the latest Classic odds. Watch out for special offers and price boosts for these and the other top races at Epsom.

Epsom betting – The Big Meetings

The Epsom Derby meeting also features the Group 1 Epsom Oaks and The Coronation Cup. The other Group races at the meeting the three-day meeting are The Princess Elizabeth Stakes and The Diomed Stakes.

The latter is named after the winner of the first ever Derby Stakes and is for older horses over a mile. The April meeting features the Blue Riband Derby trial and two of the oldest handicaps in the racecourse calendar.

The City and Suburban Handicap and the Great Metropolitan Handicap date back to 1851 and 1846 respectively. Epsom also stages several popular evening meetings during the summer.

Epsom Betting – The Big Races

The Derby is the Blue Riband event of the flat racing season and is one of the biggest ante-post betting races of the year. It is the most sought-after Classic race for three-year-old colts.

Fillies are eligible but the best staying three-year-old fillies invariably run in the Oaks over the same distance. The Derby is the middle leg of the English Triple Crown.

The first leg is the 2,000 Guineas over a mile with the final leg coming over a mile and three-quarters in the St Leger. Nijinsky was the last horse to win the Triple Crown in 1970, although it is rarely attempted these days.

You can get all the latest Epsom odds and Epsom betting tips at news.williamhill.com. The site also provides full previews and the latest running and riding plans for the Classic races.

Epsom Betting Tips

Epsom’s undulations can cause all sorts of traffic problems, particularly in large fields. Some large horses can struggle to get balanced and cannot hold a good position during the race.

Trainers like to give their Classic horses experience on similarly testing tracks. Horses that have handled the tight turns of Chester successfully should have no problems at Epsom.

The Lingfield Derby Trial also takes place over a track which has similarities. Stamina is a key factor when assessing Epsom Tips. Many horses go to the Derby and Oaks with form over a mile or ten furlongs but struggle to stay at Epsom.

The Epsom Dash is a popular sprint handicap at the Derby meeting in June. This is an excellent course for track specialists and Caspian Prince won the Dash in 2014, 2016 and 2017. Remarkably, he had a different trainer on each occasion.

When the going is soft, the stand side rides faster and the runners invariably tack across as soon as they reach the home turn.

Front runners have an advantage in these conditions as they can race right up against the rail. High numbers have a slight advantage in five and six furlong races but the reverse is true over seven furlongs.

Epsom Course Characteristics

Epsom is a switchback course of just over a mile and a half and provides the ultimate test of the thoroughbred. The Classic races begin with an uphill climb followed by a turning descent.

The Epsom camber slopes towards the far rail up the straight and there is a sharp rise in the final furlong. When the going is soft, jockeys tend to bring their horses up the stand side rail in search of better ground.

The five furlong course is downhill until the final 100 yards and is the fastest in the world. Stone Of Folca set a world record time for five furlongs on turf when winning the Epsom Dash in 53.69 seconds in 2012.

Epsom Racecourse - How to get there

The racecourse can be accessed via Junction 9 of the M25. The Derby Festival meeting is sign-posted on all major approach roads.

Tattenham Corner, Epsom Downs and Epsom are all within 3 miles of the track and a regular shuttle bus operates on race days.

Epsom Horse Racing History

Racing on the Epsom Downs began in 1661 and the first official meetings took place in 1730. In 1769, the great Eclipse recorded his first victory at Epsom.

His descendants include Secretariat and Phar Lap and his skeleton is on permanent display at the Royal Veterinary College in Hertfordshire.

The 12th Earl of Derby created the Oaks in 1779 and the following year the inaugural running of The Derby took place. It is part of racing folklore that the Derby would have been named after Sir Charles Bunbury but for the toss of a coin.

The race was originally over a mile but was increased to a mile and a half in 1784. In 1913, suffragette Emily Davison threw herself in front of the King’s horse during the Derby and later died from her injuries.

The race was moved to Newmarket during both World Wars and traditionally took place on the first Wednesday in June. It was moved to a Saturday in 1995 in a bid to raise the profile of the race.

The Derby remains one of the most prestigious Classic races in the world and is the race after which all other “Derby” races are named.

Famous Epsom Races and Racehorses

The brilliant win of Sea Bird in 1965 and the breath-taking victory of Nijinsky in 1970 are among the most famous Derby winning performances of all time.

Other famous Derby winners include Pinza (1953), Mill Reef (1971), Shergar (1981) and Sea The Stars (2009).

Pinza was famously ridden to victory by Sir Gordon Richards. The legendary jockey had recently been knighted and was having his final ride in the Derby after being beaten in all 27 previous attempts.

Shergar set a record winning distance of ten lengths in 1981. The Aga Khan’s colt was one of the most popular Epsom tips after winning his previous race at Chester by 12 lengths.

Lester Piggott is the leading jockey of all-time in The Derby with eight winners. He won his first Derby when aged eighteen aboard 33-1 shot Never Say Die in 1954.

Many believe that his ride on The Minstrel in 1977 was the finest ever witnessed at Epsom.

Notable winners of the Oaks include Sun Princess (1983), Oh So Sharp (1985), Ouija Board (2004) and Enable (2017). Oh So Sharp was one of eight Oaks winners for the late Sir Henry Cecil.

In 1977 Her Majesty The Queen won the race with Dunfermline who would later upset the odds when beating hot favourite Affirmed in the St Leger.

Aidan O’Brien has a terrific record in the big races and regularly features in Epsom betting tips. St Nicholas Abbey won the Coronation Cup for three consecutive seasons between 2011 and 2013.

Petite Etoile (1960 and 1961), Triptych (1987 and 1988) and Warrsan (2003 and 2004) all won the Coronation Cup twice. Other popular winners include Mill Reef (1972), Time Charter (1984) and French Champion Cirrus des Aigles (2014).
