Falmouth Stakes betting with William Hill

The Falmouth Stakes is a Group 1 race over 1m for fillies and mares aged three years and upwards. It was upgraded to Group 1 status in 2004 and is one of the feature races at the Newmarket July meeting.

The Falmouth Stakes is the fourth race in the British Champions Series Fillies and Mares category. Notable winners include Sonic Lady (1986, 1987), Soviet Song (2004, 2005) and Goldikova (2009).

The Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot often has a big influence on the Falmouth Stakes odds.

Falmouth Stakes betting tips

Previous winning form in a Group or Listed class race is a common feature when looking for your Falmouth Stakes betting tip. Most previous winners had already won over 1m or further prior to taking this race.

Falmouth Stakes bets should have had at least one previous race in the current season.

The Newmarket July course is considered very fair, but previous form on the track can be an advantage. Many of the previous winners raced at Royal Ascot prior to coming here. Very few runners have managed to overcome a lengthy absence to win this race.

Jockey Ryan Moore has been very successful in recent seasons, winning on Integral (2014), Alice Springs (2016) and Roly Poly (2017). Integral’s victory was a fifth in the race for trainer Sir Michael Stoute. He trained dual winner Sonic Lady, while winning with Royal Heroine (1983) and Lovers Knot (1998).

Falmouth Stakes betting trends

Favourites have a mixed record in this race, although it’s rare for a rank outsider to win. Timepiece was a 16/1 shot when winning for Sir Henry Cecil in 2011, defeating the 13/8 favourite Sahpresa.

The biggest shock result in the Falmouth Stakes was in 2006 when Clive Brittain’s 50/1 outsider Rajeem made all the running under Kerrin McEvoy.

Sonic Lady became the first repeat winner of the Falmouth Stakes in 1986 and 1987. Soviet Song emulated her achievement with back-to-back victories in 2004 and 2005. She was a strong Falmouth Stakes bet for a record third victory in 2006, but finished a disappointing sixth.

In winning the race as a five-year-old, Soviet Song joined Proudwings (2001) as the only winners over the age of four since it was opened to older horses. Proudwings was trained in Germany and ridden by Japanese champion jockey Yutaka Take.

Falmouth Stakes ante-post betting pointers

This race tests the best three-year-old fillies against their elders for the first time. Falmouth Stakes winners have usually held an official rating of 112 or higher before running here. Most have run in a Group 1 or Group 2 race on their previous start.

Horses that ran in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot often feature prominently in the Falmouth Stakes betting. That race brings together the best fillies from the 1,000 Guineas in England, Ireland and France.

Prior to Alpha Centauri in 2018, the last Coronation Stakes winner to take the Falmouth Stakes was Chimes Of Freedom in 1990. Both fillies ran in the colours of the Niarchos family.

The Duke of Cambridge Stakes is another useful form guide at Royal Ascot. Integral (2014) and Amazing Maria (2015) won both races.

Falmouth Stakes winners have numerous options including the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. The Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois or the Prix Rothschild at Deauville are other likely targets.

Falmouth Stakes winners have also gone on to run in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket later in the season and the Breeders’ Cup Mile in November.

Falmouth Stakes history and memorable winners

The Falmouth Stakes was first run in 1911 and was restricted to three-year-old fillies. It was opened to older fillies and mares in 1974 and was run as the Child Stakes between 1975 and 1992.

Lester Piggott is the leading jockey in the history of the Falmouth Stakes with seven winners. His first was aboard Sylphide in 1957 and his final win was in 1994 on Lemon Souffle.

Sonic Lady was a daughter of Nureyev, out of Stumped, who was herself a winner of the Falmouth Stakes in 1980.

Al Bahathri won in 1985 after winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. She became a very influential broodmare and lived to the age of 32. She has a gallop at Newmarket named in her honour.

The race ended in controversy in 2013 after Elusive Kate had beaten Sky Lantern by a quarter of a length. Elusive Kate hung to her left in the closing stages and her jockey struck Sky Lantern with his whip while attempting to straighten his mount.

The result remained unaltered, but connections had to survive an appeal before they could be certain of retaining the prize.

Soviet Song was a great favourite with the racing public and was owned by the Elite Racing Club. She was the highest-rated older filly in the world in 2004 when her victories also included the Sussex Stakes. She defeated 1,000 Guineas winner and odds-on favourite Attraction in this race in 2004.

Goldikova was an easy winner of the Falmouth Stakes in 2009, trained in France by Freddy Head and ridden by Olivier Peslier. The remarkable daughter of Anabaa won 14 Group 1 races and is the only horse to win The Breeders’ Cup Mile three times.

Alpha Centauri was a brilliant winner in 2018 for Jessica Harrington and Colm O’Donoghue. She had won by six lengths at Royal Ascot on her previous start and was one of the hottest Falmouth Stakes tips in years. She took the lead early in the race and powered clear to win easily.

Falmouth Stakes 2021

The 1,000 Guineas is one of the key factors in the Falmouth Stakes odds. The fillies’ first Classic was won by 66/1 outsider Billesdon Brook in 2018, the longest-ever-priced winner of the race. Karl Burke’s Laurens finished second, but went on to prove herself among the best fillies of her generation.

She beat Alpha Centauri at Leopardstown in September, although it later transpired that the runner-up had picked up a career-ending injury. Laurens won the Sun Chariot Stakes in October and was probably over the top when well beaten at Ascot on her final start.

Newspaperofrecord could bring an International flavour to the race. She’s trained by Chad Brown in America and was a brilliant winner of the Juvenile Fillies’ Turf in November. She’s reportedly being aimed at the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot this summer.

Aidan O’Brien usually has a leading contender in the Falmouth Stakes betting. Fairyland won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes in September and could develop into a Classic filly this season.

O’Brien also trains So Perfect who was less than a length behind Fairyland at Newmarket.

John Oxx’s filly Skitter Scatter won her last three races as a two-year-old, culminating in the Moyglare Stakes at the Curragh. Pretty Pollyanna won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes on this course in 2018 by seven lengths. She did not quite live up to that form in her next two races, but a return to the July course could be on the cards.
