The Jersey Stakes is named after the 4th Earl of Jersey, a courtier of King George III who served as Master of the Buckhounds and the sovereign’s Representative at Ascot at the end of the 18th Century.

Initially established in 1919, the Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes, a three-year cycle of races that was discontinued after the First World War

From 1849-1918, the Triennial Stakes series comprised of a race for two-year-olds over 5f, a race for three-year-olds over 7f, and a race for four-year-olds over 2m, with horses returning each year to compete over further distances.

Expert Eye’s storming four-and-a-half-length Jersey Stakes victory for Sir Michael Stoute in 2018 came a few hours after the Berkshire specialist became the winning-most trainer in Royal Ascot history, thanks to Poet’s World’s Prince of Wales’ Stakes success.

It’s races like the Jersey Stakes that have propelled the master of Freemason Lodge stables to such exalted status in this part of the UK, with Stoute’s first win coming all the way back in 1977, courtesy of Etienne Gerard, and Expert Eye’s triumph taking his tally to six.

The latter broke a 12-year Jersey Stakes winless spell for Stoute, although the veteran handler doesn’t have a runner every year and claimed a solid second with Thikriyaat in 2016.

Second place is the best Jersey Stakes result Aidan O’Brien has managed for a while, with 66/1 shot Spirit of Valor’s narrow loss to Andre Fabre’s 2/1 hotpot Le Brivido in 2017 the closest Ballydoyle have come to taking this since Gale Force Ten’s win four years earlier.

That 9/2 favourite followed on from 20/1 Ballydoyle outsider Ishvana’s victory 12 months prior, after O’Brien had gone without a win in this race since breaking his Jersey Stakes duck with Mozart in 2001.

Dermot Weld’s 2014 winner Mustajeeb was perhaps the most impressive in the race’s relatively short history, with the colt posting the fastest Royal Ascot Jersey Stakes time since records began in beating fellow 9/2 co-favourite Muwaary.

William Haggas has had multiple entrants in a couple of recent Jersey Stakes runnings, with the 1996 Epsom Derby winner claiming plenty of place money for his trouble, but not yet capturing the crown.

Jersey Stakes betting - jockeys to watch

Given the big fields this Group Three spectacle tends to attract, it’s unsurprising that few jockeys have managed multiple Jersey Stakes victories since the days of Lester Piggott and Sir Gordon Richards.

Frankie Dettori’s sole Jersey Stakes success came in 2004 aboard old boss Saeed Bin Suroor’s Kheleyf, and the Italian hasn’t managed a top-three finish over the past decade.

Ryan Moore has fared a little better, managing a couple of thirds for Aidan O’Brien and Sir Michael Stoute in recent runnings, although the Ballydoyle number one hasn’t tasted Jersey Stakes glory since steering home Mark Johnston’s Rainfall in 2010.

Intriguingly, a number of recent Jersey Stakes-winning jockeys have been neither from the UK nor Irish, with New Zealand’s James McDonald, France’s Pierre Charles-Boudot and Norway-born William Buick showing the rest of the world how it’s done of late.

Jersey Stakes betting trends to follow

With big fields come big Jersey Stakes betting odds, meaning that even though horses from the top three in the betting have dominated the winners’ circle, there’s still some value to be had.

Only Le Brivido has come in at odds of under 4/1 over the past decade and a half, with the average winning SP almost hitting double figures during that time frame.

A previous Ascot run can prove useful, with around a third of recent winners holding prior experience at the Berkshire track, and one - Strong Suit in 2011 – doubling up after Group Two Coventry Stakes success the previous summer.

Half at least placed last time out, with a third of those going into the race off the back of a win, and almost all recent Jersey Stakes winners had at least one run over the 7f distance on their CVs.
