Kempton betting with William Hill

Guide to Betting at Kempton

Kempton Park is one of the premier jump racing tracks in Britain and hosts the King George VI Chase, one of the most prestigious prizes in National Hunt racing. Kempton odds on the King George are available all season.

The racecourse opened a new floodlit all-weather track in 2006 and now also holds flat meetings throughout the year. The course no longer stages flat racing on turf.

William Hill promotions include special offers and price boosts for all your Kempton betting, as well as ante-post odds for the King George.

Betting at Kempton – The Big Meetings

The Boxing Day meeting features three Grade 1 races; The King George VI Chase, The Christmas Hurdle and the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase.

The King George is second only to the Cheltenham Gold Cup in terms of prestige in National Hunt racing. The Christmas Hurdle and Kauto Star Novices’ Chase are both significant trials for the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The second day of the Christmas meeting features the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase and Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase, which are other contests that are popular from a Kempton odds perspective.

The Lanzarote Hurdle in January and the 3m handicap chase in February, formerly The Racing Post Chase, are the most valuable handicap races staged at the track.

The most important flat races at Kempton are the Group 3 September Stakes and Sirenia Stakes. The Easter Stakes, Magnolia Stakes and Rosebery Handicap were all long-established as part of Kempton’s turf racing history and now take place on the all-weather.

Kempton Park Betting – The Big Races

The King George VI Chase is a Grade 1 event over 3m, with over £200,000 in prize money. It’s the second leg of the Betfair Million bonus for any horse that wins the Betfair Chase at Haydock, the King George and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The Christmas Hurdle is one of the top trials for the Champion Hurdle and is often used as a stepping stone to the Festival. The Kauto Star Novices’ Chase (formerly The Feltham Novices’ Chase) is a key trial for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham, a 3m race for novices.

The February jumps meeting features a valuable Grade 3 Handicap Chase and the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle. The Adonis is the last significant trial for the Triumph Hurdle.

The Lanzarote Hurdle is named after the 1974 Champion Hurdle winner, who won the Christmas Hurdle twice. The distance of the race was increased from 2m to 2m5f in 2007.

The September Stakes was first run in 1979 and attained Group 3 status in 1982. The Sirenia Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds over 6f and was upgraded from Listed to Group 3 status in 2003.

Kempton Park Betting Tips

Kempton’s flat track and relatively easy fences means it poses a completely different test to Cheltenham.

Horses that would struggle to stay the 3m2f at Cheltenham have a much greater chance of staying 3m at Kempton. Therefore, speedier horses can typically prove more backable in the Kempton odds than can be the case at Cheltenham.

However, Kempton can still prove testing, particularly when the going rides soft.

Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls are the leading trainers at Kempton jump meetings. Both regularly feature among Kempton tips with a healthy percentage of winners.

Jockey Nico de Boinville has a fine record for Henderson at Kempton, while Barry Geraghty is another jockey to follow.

One of our top Kempton tips is to take note of the draw on the all-weather course. A low draw is a significant advantage at Kempton, particularly in sprint races.

The short run-in at Kempton in 1m1f and 1m2f races also favours front runners.

John Gosden has been a good supporter of Kempton’s all-weather track. Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby also has a good record here, particularly with his juveniles. Jim Crowley, Luke Morris and Adam Kirby are all prolific winning jockeys on the flat and worthy of a second look in any Kempton betting odds.

Kempton Park Course Characteristics

Kempton is a right-handed course and one of the flattest jumping tracks in the country.

It’s also one of the easiest courses to jump and an ideal introduction to steeplechasing for a novice.

The hurdles course tends to favour flat-racing-bred horses, unless the going is soft.

The flat course is the only right-handed all-weather track in the country and has two separate circuits. The inner circuit is for sprint races over 5f and races over 1m1f and 1m2f.

It has a short run-in of under two furlongs, a furlong shorter than the outer circuit. Low numbers have a clear advantage on the inner circuit, particularly in sprints. This could be useful to know when assessing any Kempton odds.

Kempton Park Racecourse - How to get there

Kempton Park is located at Sunbury-on-Thames in Surrey. The racecourse is less than a mile from Junction 1 of the M3 on the A308 between Sunbury-on-Thames and Hampton Court.

Kempton is 16 miles from London and the railway station is just 200 yards from the course. Trains run every half an hour from London Waterloo, except on Boxing Day when a special bus service is available from Turnham Green Underground Station in Chiswick.

Kempton Park Horse Racing History

Kempton Racecourse was opened in 1878 and held regular flat and jumps meetings on turf.

No racing took place at Kempton during both World Wars, when it was converted to a temporary prison camp. Kempton’s wartime fixtures were shared between Gatwick, Hurst Park and Sandown Park.

Racing resumed at Kempton in 1947. The current Grandstand was completed in 1997, with the next major development being the introduction of the new polytrack surface. The new floodlit track opened on 25th March 2006.

Controversial plans were announced in 2017 to sell the site for £100 million and build 3,000 homes. It was proposed that Kempton’s major races be transferred to Sandown and elsewhere. This news was widely condemned by the racing community.

In February 2018, the local council stated that the development was now “unlikely” to go ahead.

Famous Kempton Park Races and Racehorses

The King George VI Chase has been won by some of the greatest chasers of all time. Mill House (1963), Arkle (1965), Pendil (1972 and 1973) and Best Mate (2002) were all successful in this race.

Michael Dickinson trained Wayward Lad to win the race three times in 1982, 1983 and 1985.

Desert Orchid recorded four victories in five years (1986, 1988, 1989 and 1990). His fine record was surpassed when Kauto Star gained a remarkable fifth King George victory in 2011. Paul Nicholls trained him to win for four successive seasons between 2006 and 2009, ridden each time by Ruby Walsh.

Nicky Henderson is the leading trainer in the history of the Christmas Hurdle, including two victories for Binocular (2010 and 2011). Other notable winners include Champion Hurdlers Kribensis (1988 and 1999), Faugheen (2014 and 2011) and Buveur D’Air (2017).

Long Run (2009) and Coneygree (2014) both won the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase and went on to Gold Cup glory.

Lizzie Kelly became the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 Chase in Britain landing the Kempton odds on Tea For Two in 2015.

The September Stakes was won twice by Mutamam (2000 and 2001) and Prince Bishop (2013 and 2014). The latter went on to win the Dubai World Cup in 2015.

Sir Michael Stoute is the leading trainer in the September Stakes, his winners including Arab Spring in 2016.
