The big Limerick meeting of the year is the four-day Christmas Festival in December. The feature races are the Greenmount Park Novice Chase and the Dorans Pride Novice Hurdle.

The Greenmount Park is run on St Stephen’s Day, the opening day of the festival. There’s also a Ladies’ Day and a Family Fun Day to complete the meeting.

The Fergus O’Toole Memorial Novice Hurdle and the Munster National take place in October. The Dawn Run Mares Novice Chase and the Limerick E.B.F. Novice Chase are held in March.

The biggest Limerick betting race on the flat is the listed Martin Molony Stakes in April. There are also a variety of day, evening and weekend fixtures throughout the year and free entertainment in summer.

Limerick Betting – The Big Races

The Greenmount Park Novice Chase is over 2m4f and was given Grade 1 status in 2018. This race is considered a trial for the big novice events at the Cheltenham Festival.

The Dawn Run Mares Novice Chase was first run in 2002 and was awarded Grade 3 status the following year. It’s over 2m6f and is open to four-year-olds and upwards.

The Dorans Pride Novice Hurdle was upgraded from Grade 3 to Grade 2 in 2015. It’s over 3m and is a recognised trial for the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

The Grade 3 Fergus O’Toole Memorial Novice Hurdle over 2m6f was first run in 2001.

The Limerick E.B.F. Mares Novice Hurdle is also a Grade 3 race over 2m and was first run in 2004.

There are always plenty of Limerick tips for the Munster National, a handicap chase over 3m. The race was named the JT McNamara Munster National in 2016 to honour the late jockey who passed away three years after being paralysed in a fall at the 2013 Cheltenham Festival.

The Martin Molony Stakes is named after the locally-born jockey who was champion National Hunt jockey in Ireland for six consecutive seasons. It was first run in 2003 with victory going to Dermot Weld and Maharib.

Limerick Betting Tips

Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott dominate the Limerick odds and are prolific winners at the course. Mullins has much the better strike rate of the two, particularly over fences where his runners often feature in Limerick tips.

Henry de Bromhead also does extremely well with his runners over the larger obstacles at this venue.

Aidan O’Brien leads the trainer statistics on the flat here in recent seasons. Runners from the yards of Dermot Weld and Michael Halford are also worth considering for your Limerick bets.

Limerick Course Characteristics

Limerick is a right-handed, oval track of around 1m3f. The runners go uphill on the back straight, before a downhill run into the 3f home straight. The finishing straight is on a slight incline.

There are seven fences to be jumped on each circuit, five of them in the back straight. The final two fences can be tricky and there is a run-in of about a furlong.

A low draw is an advantage for your Limerick bets in flat races on fast ground. The course suits front-runners, unless the going is soft.

Famous Limerick Races and Racehorses

Dual Aintree Grand National winner Tiger Roll won the Munster National in 2016. Gordon Elliott’s versatile gelding won by seven lengths off a weight of just 10st 6lbs.

Remarkably, he did not feature in many Limerick tips that year and started at 20/1. He was rated 138 at the time and went on to win the 2018 Grand National off 150 and followed up in 2019 off a mark of 159.

One of the hottest Limerick tips in the history of the Munster National was Total Recall in 2017. He had recently joined Willie Mullins from the stable of Ms Sandra Hughes and started a heavily-backed 2/1 favourite.

The result was never in doubt as he cruised to victory under Ruby Walsh. He then defied a rise of 18lbs in the weights to land the prestigious Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury.

Past winners of the Greenmount Park Novice Chase include Imperial Call (1994), Sir Des Champs (2011), Gilgamboa (2014), Outlander (2015) and Bellshill (2016).

Imperial Call won the 1996 Cheltenham Gold Cup and Sir Des Champs won the Punchestown Gold Cup and the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup in 2013. Bellshill won the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in 2019.

Willie Mullins saddled Vroum Vroum Mag to win the Dawn Run Mares Novice Chase in 2015. Notable previous winners of the Dorans Pride Novice Hurdle include Weapon’s Amnesty (2008), Faugheen (2013), Martello Tower (2014) and Penhill (2016).

Weapon’s Amnesty won the Albert Bartlett in 2009 and the RSA Chase in 2010. Faugheen was a brilliant winner of the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2015.

Martello Tower won the Albert Bartlett in 2015, with Penhill winning the same race in 2017 before going on to land the Stayers’ Hurdle in 2018.

Limerick Horse Racing History

Racing has taken place in the Limerick area since 1790 and they previously raced at Greenpark from 1869 to 1999.

Prior to Greenpark, they had raced at a variety of locations in the area, including Bruff, Newcastle and Ballinacurra. Greenpark was finally engulfed by urban development, with a new site identified near the village of Patrickswell.

The new racecourse was opened in 2001 on a site of 400 acres of prime greenbelt farmland, with panoramic views across the surrounding countryside.

The impressive Grandstand with its cantilevered truss roof is the main feature of the course, which now boasts some of the finest facilities in the country.

Limerick Racecourse - How to get there

Limerick is situated just off the M20 at exit 4, around five miles south of the city and three miles from Adare village. There is free car parking for all racegoers at the course.

The nearest train station is at Colbert Station on Parnell Street, which is just 15 minutes from the racecourse.

There are direct train connections from Dublin, Enniss, Waterford and Rosslare. The closest airport is Shannon, just over 12 miles away. There are flights from all major UK airports.
