Betting at Lingfield Park – The Big Meetings

Classic Trials weekend in May is the biggest turf meeting of the year at Lingfield. The Lingfield Derby Trial is the feature race, supported by the Lingfield Oaks Trial and the Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes.

Lingfield Park is the leading all-weather track in the country and plays host to the £1 million All-Weather Championship meeting at Easter. There are always plenty of Lingfield tips for this increasingly popular meeting. It’s the culmination of over 200 all-weather meetings with qualifying races for Finals Day.

The Inaugural Championships meeting took place on Good Friday 2014 and the quality has improved, year-on-year. Early Lingfield odds are available for the All-Weather Championships, as well as the Classic trials.

Lingfield Park – The Big Races

The Lingfield Derby Trial was first run in 1932 and was won by April the Fifth, the first of several winners to go on to also win the Epsom Derby. The race formerly held Group 3 status, but was relegated to Listed class in 2013.

The Lingfield Oaks Trial also has Listed status, having been downgraded from a Group 3 race in 1985. It still retains some significance as a trial for the Epsom Classic, one of the few suitable races for fillies over the Oaks distance of 1m4f.

The Group 3 Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes was first run in 1994 and quickly became established as one of the top Lingfield betting races. The only other Group race staged at Lingfield is the Winter Derby on the all-weather surface in late February or early March.

The 10f Group 3 race was introduced in 1998 and is one of the highlights of the winter season.

The all-weather track also stages four other Listed races; The Cleves Stakes, The Winter Derby Trial, The Hever Sprint Stakes and the International Trial.

Lingfield Betting Tips

It’s easy for horses to become unbalanced on Lingfield’s turf track, so previous course form is an advantage. When studying the Lingfield odds for the Classic trials, it usually pays to concentrate on horses with plenty of stamina in their pedigree.

Aidan O’Brien usually has runners prominent in the Lingfield betting for the Classic trials. The similarities between Lingfield and Epsom ensure a high-class entry and he has always been a strong supporter of the race.

O’Brien saddled Kew Gardens to finish second here in 2018, before going on to win the St Leger.

One of our top Lingfield tips is to follow previous course winners. Rapporteur (1989-1994) and Krystal Max (1995-2001) were prolific Lingfield winners, recording 14 victories apiece on the all-weather. Rapporteur also won five times on the turf course at Lingfield, but never won at any other track in 33 attempts.

Trainers William Haggas and Richard Hannon often feature in Lingfield bets and have enjoyed plenty of success here. Simon Dow also does well at Lingfield and has produced some long-priced winners at the course.

Lingfield Park Course Characteristics

Lingfield is left handed with a turf course of almost 1m4f, which cuts across the straight 7f course at the 4f marker. When considering your Lingfield bets, statistics indicate that a high a draw is favoured in turf races up to 7f.

The going can have a big impact on Lingfield betting. On good ground, front runners gather momentum on the downhill run into the straight and can be difficult to peg back. However, the track can become extremely testing in soft ground when stamina comes into play.

The all-weather track at Lingfield is on the inside of the turf track so is much sharper in nature. The Polytrack is just under 1m2f round with no discernible draw bias.

Lingfield races over jumps are frequently run on soft or heavy ground. This puts the emphasis on stamina and makes the fences more testing than they would appear. National Hunt flat races are usually run on the all-weather surface.

Lingfield Park - How to get there

Lingfield Park racecourse is situated in Lingfield, Surrey and is close to the borders of Sussex and Kent. The course is clearly signposted from the M25 at Junction 6 and the M23 at Junction 10.

There are regular train services from London to East Grinstead via Oxted to Lingfield Park Railway Station, which is adjacent to the racecourse.

Lingfield Park Horse Racing History

Lingfield Park was established as a National Hunt course in 1890 and acquired a flat-racing licence four years later. Racing under both codes has continued ever since, the only interruption coming during World War II when it was requisitioned as a camp for Prisoners of War.

In 1989, Lingfield Park took the bold move of creating an all-weather Equitrack. The surface was re-laid as a Polytrack in 2001, a change that was greeted favourably by trainers and jockeys.

There have been considerable improvements to the infrastructure and facilities at Lingfield Racecourse in recent years.

Famous Lingfield Races and Racehorses

Teenoso won the Lingfield Derby Trial in 1983 for Geoff Wragg and Steve Cauthen. The colt followed up in the Epsom Derby with Lester Piggott in the saddle. It was a record ninth and final Derby win for the 11-time champion jockey.

There were plenty of Lingfield bets on Cauthen, who dominated the Derby Trial with four wins in five years between 1983 and 1987. Slip Anchor made all the running to win the race by 10 lengths in 1985, resulting in his Derby odds being slashed. Cauthen employed the same tactics at Epsom and won the Derby by seven lengths.

The Aga Khan’s Kahyasi was odds-on favourite in the Lingfield betting when winning the Derby Trial in 1988. He went on to win the Derby at 11/1 for trainer Luca Cumani and jockey Ray Cochrane.

Cumani also trained High-Rise, a strong Lingfield tip when winning for Frankie Dettori in 1998. He won at Epsom at 20/1 under Olivier Peslier.

Other notable trial winners include subsequent St Leger winners Bob’s Return (1993) and Silver Patriarch (1997).

The Lingfield Oaks Trial has also produced plenty of Classic winners. User Friendly (1992), Lady Carla (1996) and Ramruma (1999) all went on to win the Epsom Oaks.

Give Thanks (1983) and Seventh Heaven (2016) later won the Irish Oaks, while Midday (2009) went on to win at the Breeders’ Cup.

Running Stag won the first ever Winter Derby for trainer Philip Mitchell in 1998. Notable subsequent winners include Godolphin’s Tryster in 2015 and course specialist Grendisar the following season.
