The Arc is the big Longchamp betting event of the year. The Sunday card also includes Group 1 two-year-old races in the Prix Marcel Boussac and the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, both significant trials for next season’s Classic races.

Longchamp Betting – The Big Races

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. It is over 1m4f and is open to three-year-olds and upwards. It was first staged in 1920 and named after the famous Arc de Triomphe monument.

The inaugural running was won by a three-year-old colt named Comrade. The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club began sponsoring the Arc in 2008 and boosted the prize fund from €2 million to €4 million.

The Poule d’Essai des Poulains is a three-year-old Classic race for colts over a mile. It was first run in 1883 and was immediately granted Group 1 status. The winner of the race often goes on to the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) next time, especially since that race was reduced in distance from 1m4f to 1m2f in 2005.

The Poule d’Essai des Pouliches is the mile Classic for fillies.

Longchamp Course Characteristics

The racecourse has quite a complex layout of interlaced tracks. The longest course is around 1m6f and there are shorter tracks of 1m4f and 1m2f. There’s also a 5f track for sprint races which crosses the others.

There’s a long downhill turn into the home straight where the horses tend to fan out across the track for the final 3f.

They generally tend to go a slower pace in France and gradually pick up the tempo from the home turn. There can be traffic problems in big fields.

A high draw is a disadvantage for your Longchamp bets in the Arc.

Famous Longchamp Races and Racehorses

Longchamp betting for the Arc has become increasingly popular as more British and Irish-trained horses make the short trip across the Channel. It’s the main autumn target for the top middle-distance horses.

Longchamp Horse Racing History

Racing was first held here in April 1857 when the crowd included Emperor Napoleon III among an impressive list of aristocrats.

The stands have been rebuilt and improved over the years but the major re-development took place between 2015 and 2018.

During the extensive improvement programme, the Arc was transferred to Chantilly. The grand re-opening in 2018 revealed a smaller grandstand and a more open-plan Longchamp, with more greenery and a more relaxed atmosphere.

The course also introduced two new twilight meetings and a free concert after racing for the first time in its history. It’s now marketed as Paris Longchamp and has a capacity of 50,000.

Longchamp Racecourse - How to get there

There are frequent flights from all major UK airports to Paris. Longchamp racecourse is between the Bois de Boulogne and the Seine. The nearest metro stations are at Porte d’Auteuil and Porte Maillot. Free shuttle buses are available on weekends and public holidays from both stations.

Taxis are readily available from 2, Route des Tribunes and there is also a Tramway at T2 Suresnes Longchamp, going towards Porte de Versailles and La Defense.
