The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is a Group 1 race over 1m4f at Longchamp in October. It’s the most prestigious horse race in Europe and one of the richest turf races in the world. Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe betting is available all year round.

The Arc attracts Classic winners from different generations, as well as top International horses. Famous winners include Sea Bird (1965), Mill Reef (1971), Dancing Brave (1986), Sea The Stars (2009) and Enable (2017, 2018).

A high percentage of Arc winners had raced within the previous month and already had Group 1-winning form over 1m4f. Fillies have a good recent record in the race, notably through the exploits of dual winners Treve and Enable.

The draw can have an impact on the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe odds. A high draw is generally considered a disadvantage, although Treve and Golden Horn won from stalls 15 and 16 respectively.

Jockeys riding horses with a high draw must decide whether to go fast from the gate or drop in behind and hope for luck in running.

Andre Fabre trained a record seventh Arc winner with Rail Link in 2006. His previous winners include Peintre Celebre (1997) and Hurricane Run (2005). Several horses trained in Japan have been placed here, including El Condor Pasa (1999), Deep Impact (2006) and Orfevre (2012).

Enable provided Frankie Dettori with two of his record six Arc winners in 2017 and 2018. His first success came with Lammtarra (1995), followed by Sakhee (2001), Marienbard (2002) and Golden Horn (2015).

Olivier Peslier also has a good Arc record, including three successive victories from 1996 to 1998. He gained a fourth Arc victory aboard outsider Solemia in 2012.

Enable was been a very popular Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe bet in 2017 and 2018. She ended a run of seven successive beaten favourites when winning at 10/11 in 2017. Enable was a strong Arc tip the following season, after winning the September Stakes impressively and won at even money.

Prior to Enable’s victories, there had been a wide variety of price returns in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe odds. Danedream (2011) at 20/1 and Solemia (2012) at 33/1 were particularly difficult to predict from the form book.

Treve returned at 11/1 when recording her second victory in 2014, after Oaks winner Taghrooda was sent off favourite. Epsom Derby winners Workforce (2010) and Golden Horn (2015) returned at 6/1 and 9/2 respectively.

The longest-priced winner in Arc history was the German trained Star Appeal at 118/1 in 1975.

Horses aged three and four have been dominant in the Arc, with older horses rarely managing to win. Five-year-olds Star Appeal (1975), Tony Bin (1988) and Marienbard (2002) were the only older horses to win the Arc in a period spanning more than 70 years.

Enable (2017, 2018) became the eighth horse to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe twice. Other dual winners include Ribot (1955, 1956), Alleged (1977, 1978) and Treve (2013, 2014). Sagace won the Arc in 1984 and was first past the post in 1985, only to be disqualified for bumping Rainbow Quest with the placings being reversed.

Andre Fabre invariably uses the Prix Niel as the final prep race for Arc runners. He has an incredible record with horses going on from the Niel to the Arc. The form of the Prix Niel is not always upheld in the Arc. Both Peintre Celebre (1997) and Bago (2004) were beaten in the trial before winning the big race.

The Prix Vermeille has produced its fair share of Arc winners including Three Troikas (1979), Zarkava (2008) and Treve (2013). Epsom Derby winners have a good record in the race, recent colts to complete the double being Sea The Stars (2009), Workforce (2010) and Golden Horn (2015).

There have also been shock defeats for Epsom winners in the Arc, most notably Nijinsky (1970) and Troy (1979).

One race to avoid when looking at the form for your Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe tips is the St Leger at Doncaster. St Leger winners have a very poor record in the Arc. The 1m6f Classic is particularly testing and the race falls very close to the Arc in the racing calendar.

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe history and memorable winners

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was first run in 1920 and was won by Comrade. One of the earliest winners was seven-year-old Motrico (1932), who remains the oldest winner in the history of the race. It soon became established as one of the top races in Europe and is the feature race of the Arc weekend meeting in Paris.

Ribot won the 1956 Arc by six lengths, a winning margin matched by Sea Bird in 1965 and Sakhee in 2001.

Mill Reef was a popular Arc bet in 1971 after winning the Epsom Derby, the Eclipse Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He suffered a broken leg while being prepared for the 1972 Arc, but his life was saved and he went on to become a leading stallion.

Many regard the victory of Dancing Brave in 1986 as one of the best horse races of all time. The colt had been unlucky to be beaten by Shahrastani at Epsom, but avenged that defeat in the King George. Pat Eddery produced Guy Harwood’s colt with an electric burst of speed in the Arc to beat French Derby winner Bering in a race record time.

Lammtarra emulated Mill Reef by adding the Arc to his victories in the Derby and the King George in 1995. The brilliant filly Zarkava featured in many Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe betting tips in 2008. She retired undefeated after becoming the first filly to win the race for 15 years.

The race was held at Chantilly in 2016 and 2017 due to renovations at Longchamp.

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe ante-post betting is dominated by Enable and Sea Of Class, first and second in 2018. Enable will be attempting to become the first horse in history to win three Arcs.

John Gosden managed to get her to Longchamp last year after an interrupted preparation and she held off Sea Of Class by a short neck. She then beat Magical in a thrilling race for the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. The first two finished nine lengths clear of the third horse.

Sea Of Class almost overcame a wide draw in stall 15 last year with James Doyle weaving through a packed field in the home straight. All roads lead to Longchamp for both horses in 2019.

2018 Epsom Derby winner Masar was unable to race again due to injury last season. He will be Godolphin’s flagbearer this season and Charlie Appleby is also expecting great things from Ghaiyyath. He has already recorded an easy win in the Group 2 Prix d’Harcourt this season.

Too Darn Hot starts 2019 as favourite for the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby. If he stays 1m6f, the Arc could also feature in his plans.

There are also plans for the brilliant Japanese filly Almond Eye to travel over to Europe this season. She could even clash with Enable and Sea Of Class in the Yorkshire Oaks or Juddmonte International Stakes prior to Longchamp.
