Count on William Hill to have enough Ribblesdale Stakes betting to fill a top hat on Day Three of Royal Ascot, as some of the season’s premier three-year-old fillies compete for a piece of glory and a healthy prize purse.

Inaugurated in 1919, the Ribblesdale Stakes is named in honour of the 4th Baron Ribblesdale, previously Master of the Buckhounds and the sovereign’s Representative at Ascot from 1893-1895.

Originally a mile race open to all three and four-year-olds of either gender, the Ribblesdale Stakes was restricted to three-year-old fillies and extended by half a mile in 1950, having been abandoned throughout World War II.

Now held on the third day of Royal Ascot, the Ribblesdale Stakes is seen as an excellent buffer between the Epsom Oaks and its Irish equivalent in July, with many fillies heading to Curragh following this testing Group Two.

Ballydoyle fillies have dominated this race of late, with Aidan O’Brien bagging multiple recent victories and David Wachman - now retired - chipping in with another Ribblesdale Stakes win for the Tipperary stable thanks to Curvy in 2015.

John Gosden has been the only trainer to punctuate Ballydoyle’s run of victories over the past half decade or so, courtesy of Coronet in 2017.

The Sussex handler first tasted Ribblesdale Stakes success with Michita back in 2008, and picked up place money four times before managing a second win, which makes Gosden’s fillies interesting each-way options.

Saeed Bin Suroor is the top trainer in Ribblesdale Stakes history after taking this five times between 1998 and 2010, but the Godolphin man has only had one runner in the race since.

Bin Suroor returned to some semblance of form in the UK with Best Solution’s Group Two Prince of Wales’ Stakes win at Newmarket in 2018, so any future Ribblesdale Stakes entrants from the Dubai native should be noted.

Irish dual-code veteran Dermot Weld is also a multiple Ribblesdale Stakes winner thanks to Irresistible Jewel in 2002 and Princess Highway a decade later.

Despite still going strong at Rosewell House Stables in County Kildare, Weld doesn’t send too many horses to Royal Ascot these days, so any that make it across the water should be studied carefully.

Similarly, Jim Bolger’s contenders will always attract attention given the veteran’s past success with three-year-old fillies, including a Ribblesdale Stakes win with Banimpire in 2011.

Sir Michael Stoute has three Ribblesdale Stakes successes in the bank, the last with Spanish Sun in 2003, and Royal Ascot’s all-time leading trainer has seen a flurry of his fancied runners make the places in this race in recent years, so there may still be more to come.

Ribblesdale Stakes betting - jockeys to watch

Ryan Moore has been the man to follow in the Ribblesdale Stakes saddle of late, with the Brighton horseman bagging winners for both boss Aidan O’Brien and Ballydoyle alumnus David Wachman.

Frankie Dettori was aboard for all five of old gaffer Saeed Bin Suroor’s victories, having broken his Ribblesdale Stakes duck with Phantom Gold for trainer Lord Huntingdon and the Queen in 1995.

That makes the Italian the most successful jockey in Ribblesdale Stakes history, but Dettori hasn’t managed as much as a place in numerous runs since his last win with Hibaayeb in 2010.

Olivier Peslier’s 2017 victory aboard John Gosden’s Coronet came a year after the French rider steered Sir Michael Stoute’s Queen’s Trust to a fine fourth, which was his first Ribblesdale Stakes outing for over a decade.

Any horse Peslier picks up the ride on should be given close attention in the William Hill Ribblesdale Stakes betting markets.

James Doyle has been among the first five home a handful of times in recent Ribblesdale Stakes renewals, including finishing a close third aboard 20/1 shot Criteria in 2014.

The vast majority of recent winners had at least three previous runs on the flat in their back catalogues, with almost as many tasting success on multiple occasions prior to their Royal Ascot triumphs.

Around half could boast of a Group race victory going into the Berkshire clash, with the same proportion victorious in the race immediately prior to their Ribblesdale Stakes success.
