Most winners had won two or more races over hurdles before going chasing. Victory in one or more chases and at least three runs over fences are normally required to win the RSA Chase.

Most previous winners have been rated 145 or higher and won in a graded contest.

If you’re looking at age, then seven-year-olds have won 17 of the last 22 renewals. No five-year-old has won since Star de Mohaison in 2006, while

Champ’s win in 2020 means two eight-year-olds have won in the last five years.

The last 18 runnings have been shared fairly evenly, with UK-based trainers winning 10 times compared to eight Irish winners.

However, Ireland’s Willie Mullins is the leading trainer with five race wins since 1998. Not far behind him are Nicky Henderson (4) and Paul Nicholls (3). They are three powerful yards, so look out for their runners in this Grade 1 race.

Brown Advisory Novices' Chase ante-post betting pointers

The Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton Park proved to be the most significant form guide for this race in 2019. Topofthegame and Santini finished second and third at Kempton before fighting out the finish of the RSA Chase.

Might Bite would have won the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase prior to his 2017 RSA Chase victory, but fell when well clear at the last.

The 3m Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival has produced future RSA Chase winners. Weapon’s Amnesty and Bobs Worth both won that race before winning the RSA the following season.

The next objective for RSA Chase winners is usually the Mildmay Chase at Aintree or the Champion Novice Chase at Punchestown. Cooldine and Don Poli were both disappointing at Punchestown.

Might Bite won the Mildmay Chase at Aintree in 2017, while Albertas Run and Blaklion were both placed. The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the target for RSA Chase winners the following season.

RSA Chase history and memorable winners

The race was first run as the Broadway Novices’ Chase in 1946 and won by Birthlaw. Mandarin (1959) was the first horse to win this race and go on to win the Gold Cup.

Arkle won the race by 20 lengths on his first visit to Cheltenham in 1963. He was to go on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1964, 1965 and 1966 and remains the highest-rated steeplechaser of all time.

It has been run under its current sponsors since 1974. Tied Cottage (1976) and Master Smudge (1979) both won the RSA Chase and clashed in a controversial 1980 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Tied Cottage led all the way to win by eight lengths, but was later disqualified for failing a drugs test, the race being awarded to Master Smudge.

High-class winners in the 1980’s include Brown Chamberlin (1982) and Kildimo (1987). Brown Chamberlin was second to Burrough Hill Lad in the 1984 Gold Cup. Kildimo was second to Desert Orchid on several occasions, including the King George VI Chase at Kempton in 1988.

Garrison Savannah (1990) went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1991 for Jenny Pitman, ridden by her son Mark. He came agonisingly close to pulling off the Gold Cup/Grand National double when caught on the run-in at Aintree by Seagram.

1992 winner Miinnehoma won the Grand National two years later for Martin Pipe and Richard Dunwoody, owned by comedian Freddie Starr.

One of the hottest RSA Chase betting tips in recent times was Denman in 2007. The imposing gelding had been nicknamed “The Tank” and won his first four novice chases by an aggregate margin of almost 60 lengths. He started 6/5 favourite for the RSA Chase and stormed clear to win by 10 lengths. The following season he beat stable companion Kauto Star in the Gold Cup.

Looks Like Trouble (1999), Bobs Worth (2012) and Lord Windermere (2013) also went to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following season.

Brown Advisory Novice' Chase betting 2021

In 2021, the RSA Chase became the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase following a change of sponsorship. The race is also known as the Broadway Novices’ Chase – its registered BHA name.

The first winner under its new title was 1/4 favourite Monkfish, ridden by Paul Townend for trainer Willie Mullins. And he’s one novice who could turn into a very smart type.

This Grade 1 race is specifically for novice chasers over 3m at the Cheltenham Festival in March and brings together some of Britain and Ireland’s top talent.

It’s a race that could find a future Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and has thrown up plenty in the past. A prime example is 1963 winner Arkle, who went on to win the Gold Cup in the next three years.

More recently, the likes of Denman (2007), Bobs Worth (2012) and Lord Windermere (2013) have all achieved the feat.
